Water temperature in a reservoir varies in a complicated manner, i.e., it exhibits variation over different seasons, along the depth of water, over the planar location, etc. Therefore, it is a difficult subject to define the most representative value for the water temperature of a given reservoir. Nevertheless, monitoring the overall variation of water temperature is important for the effective operation of the reservoir. Then, it leads to a question where we should measure the water temperature and how many measurement stations are necessary to monitor the representative variation of water temperature in a reservoir. To provide a logical background to this decision, a theoretical framework is necessary. In this study, we investigate information contents in the observed water temperature data of Yongdam reservoir located in South Korea. We analyze vertical water temperature profiles observed at several locations over different seasons. Then, we follow the information theory and calculate the information contents of each data point and the amount of information transferred between stations. The analysis of information contents of the observed data is then interpreted in a physically meaningful manner. |
