Membrane fouling is the Achilles' heel of RO process. There are various types of fouling such as inorganic scaling, colloidal deposition, organic adsorption, and biofouling. In order to control fouling, various pre-treatment processes including chemical dosing such as antiscalant are introduced prior to RO. Nevertheless, RO membranes are contaminated by various foulants and should be cleaned. Membrane cleaning methods can be divided into physical, chemical and physio-chemical. Because use of air leads to an enhancement in flux, air sparging or air bubbling typically applied in MF and UF membranes cleaning. However, documentation on application of air bubbling during RO membrane cleaning is scare. Only the chemical cleaning methods are widely applied for RO membranes. In this study, the effect of air bubbling for enhancing the efficiency of chemical cleaning in RO membranes was investigated. |
