As part of the risk analysis, geotechnical failure modes in the different dam and reservoirs in
Korea were compared. To evaluate quantitatively the risk, the event tree analysis based on the internal erosion
toolbox of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was adopted. In the potential failure mode analysis, the
engineering assessment consisting of the literature review and site investigation were conducted. With the help
of the expert group discussion, credible and significant failure modes were carefully selected. Three cases
including S dam as a large dam, Y and G reservoirs as a small reservoir were chosen for the potential
failure mode analyses. Five failure modes were selected for S dam and Y reservoir, whereas nine failure
modes were selected for G reservoir. Comparative study on these three cases shows that potential failure
mode analysis reveals the degree of the potential risk in the dam structures.
