In order to provide a new concept of water supply system that is more sustainable into and
beyond the 21st century, small and decentralized water treatment plants and distribution
systems have been suggested for ensuring water security which consists of stability and
safety, reserving redundant water for emergency and preventing secondary contamination in
distribution system. Even now, aging and deteriorating water infrastructure is a priority issue
for Korea. Over the last several years, the limitations by conventional big and centralized
water supply system have been found out continuously. Therefore, it is imperative that
development of small and decentralized water treatment plant, more efficient equipment and
treatment technologies, application of renewable energy should become a part of the system.
In this study, engineering development of multi-storey water treatment plant introduced in the
decentralized water supply system was carried out. Design concept so called tankless system
was proposed and applied to demonstration plant design. Stability on flow and pressure of
tankless system was evaluated using lab test and numerical simulation. Water purification
demonstration facility (1,000 m3/day) design has been completed and it was expected that the
tankless system design applied to water treatment plant would be optimized.
