A trenchless rehabilitation method using polymeric spray technology to create an internal lining layer has gained popularity due to several benefits including extending life span, minimizing social costs, and relatively low direct construction cost. Conventional polymeric spray technologies use a combination of high pressure water jet and spin sprayer mounted on a skid or wheel tractor. Few drawbacks of conventional method is 1) inefficiency of surface preparation process and tuberculation removal, 2) non-uniform spraying especially where deformation occurs, and 3) difficulties of surface inspection of pre-spraying preparation. A totally new robotic polymer lining technology was developed for specifically less than 600 mm diameter water pipe. The new technology is remotely controlled during entire rehabilitation process. This new technology implements multiple roller cutters and grit blasting immediately after preliminary high-pressure jet water cleaning. The robotic body maneuvers helically against the pipe surface to forward direction while the cutters presses internal surface and scrapes existing lining layers. Grit blasting and polymeric lining nozzles spin through center of robotic body that ensures uniform distance from all directions from internal surface and maintains normal angle to the surface. Several pilot tests were conducted to confirm the technology capability and productivity. This paper describes the new technology development and discusses benefits of trenchless water pipeline rehabilitation using polymeric lining methods. |
