Water quality monitoring in distribution systems is an effective means of managing
detrimental conditions of drinking water; these conditions are a result of discolouration in the water,
unsuitable taste and odour of the water, disinfectant residuals in the water, etc. In this study, an
automatic flushing control system is developed by incorporating an online monitoring system with an
automatic drain valve. The developed system measures turbidity, concentration of chlorine residuals,
and pH in 10 min intervals. The control valve is opened to control water quality by flushing water
when high turbidity and low chlorine residuals are detected. The valve status, opening ratio, and flow
rate released, are also monitored. The developed system is installed in NS city of Korea, and it is
expected to increase customer satisfaction with regards to water quality.
