Membrane fouling is one of the most important technological problems in the use of membrane process for the treatment of drinking water and industrial water. Membrane filtration is a process to separate foulants. Membrane fouling certainly occurs because various foulants in feed water formed cake on a membrane surface. Membrane fouling is a phenomenon to decrease water flux and increase operating pressure. In a membrane process, it is important to normalize a membrane process by cleaning a fouling membrane as well as to predict membrane fouling. However, method of determining the cleaning characteristics of fouling membrane is insufficient. In this study, the membrane cleaning index was evaluated. The membrane cleaning index has been based on the modified fouling index. The cleaning characteristics of fouling membrane are determined by the following mechanisms: the beginning of cracking cake layer, after a short time the phase that the cake layer is damaged, followed by fully removed cake layer. The mathematical description of being damaged cake layer is applicable for determination of an index related. Being damaged cake layer is determined by negative formula for the gelfiltration without compaction. The various operation conditions of membrane cleaning index were evaluated. The effect of pressure and temperature was very sensitive among the various operation conditions. The membrane cleaning index may be a very useful tool for explaining and predicting the cleaning rate of fouling membrane. |
