The operation of MF is composed of a periodic cycle of filtering for 20-40 min and backwashing by filtrate for 20-60 s. A chemically enhanced backwash (CEB) is routinely employed in most cases such as one CEB operation at every several backwashing. Severe fouling needs an extensive cleaning procedure as a clean-in-place (CIP) by various chemicals such as strong acids and alkalis (Kweon et al., 2012). However, cleaning efficiency could be different for variable water characteristics and then proper cleaning methods is necessary to optimize MF membrane systems. Therefore, Aim of this study is optimized physicochemical cleaning strategies for microfiltration membrane system with different water characteristics. Lab-scale microfiltration system was used to investigate cleaning efficiency. It was able to apply various operating and cleaning condition in the MF membrane systems. Feed waters were characterized with particulates, organic, inorganic matters, and their combination to observe effects of various cleaning methods on different membrane fouling. It was expected that the current study could provide insight into the strategy of cleaning membrane fouled with different water properties and optimization of cleaning procedures within MF membrane system. |
