◎ Background (or Objective) of This Study : Marine fisheries resources have been known to be affected by various environmental conditions under a changing ocean. Climate effects on North-West Pacific ecosystem have been well reported. However, benthic ecosystem and its fisheries resources has been given less attention compared to pelagic ecosystem. The ontogeny of a targe fisheries resource is an essential factor to understand how the fisheries resource could be impacted. Abalone is one of abundant species in sub-tidal rocky shore ecosystem and has been one of the most important benthic fishery resources for a long time in the world. Ontogeny of abalone could be affected in various ways through trophic pathways within benthic community as well as direct impact of changed oceanographic conditions under the changing ocean. Population dynamics and community structure could provide valuable snapshots to understand climate effects on benthic ecosystem. In this paper, I reconstruct recent understandings in terms of climate change effects reviewing recent progresses in ecological studies on abalone in Japan. Current status of abalone fishery is also discussed as an example in benthic fisheries resources under both climate forcing and recent extreme event. |
