BGS (British Geological Survey) : The emergence of groundwater at the ground surface away from perennial river channels or the rising of groundwater into man-made ground, under conditions where the 'normal' ranges of groundwater level and groundwater flow are exceeded.
USGS (United States Geological Survey) : Ground-water flooding occurs in low-lying areas when the water table rises above the land surface.
Imperial College London : Groundwater flooding is caused by the emergence of water from sub-surface permeable strata, and is often characterised by long flood durations that can cause prolonged disruption and relatively high damage.
