Water resources are essential human need and especially important for population growth,
higher living standard, industrialization, power generation and agriculture. Climate change is
creating additional pressure for quality water resources management. All these factors
demand for development of integrated water management solutions. River information
management system in South Korea has been improved in order to proactively respond to the
change of information environment. Recently, Cloud Computing based river information
service and related data have become huge so that improvements are needed to effectively
manage Big Data. Nowadays data is gathered from many sources including terrestrial
measurements, sensor network and satellites. In this study, the future plan was suggested to
respond to the information environment changes, and to provide a future Cloud Computing
based river information service by understanding the current state of river information
management system, deriving the improvement of river information management system.
GeoServer is a platform that abstracts relational database and provide data services for the
developed web services using OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) standards. Geospatially
standard data model is developed to create a generic standard for sharing river information
data. Cloud Computing is the latest buzz word in the ICT (Information Communication
Technology). In order to share and collaborate GIS data and the computation results among
geographically dispersed users, a scalable, and computation platform, such as Cloud
Computing. In addition, the measure was derived to expand the current supplier-oriented
operating system to demand-oriented operating system by establishing the efficient
management of river-related information and utilization system, which could adapt the
changes of river management paradigm.
