. As an alternative process for softening of water in the treatment process before its release to distribution system, pellet softening has shown different benefits like the improvement of water quality and its related benefits on public health, environment, cost/benefit and aesthetics comfort.
The process of pellet softening consist in the use sand and grains as seeds and caustic soda solution (NaOH) for regulation of the pH of the effluent water after the softening. The advantage of the pellet softening is that the removal efficiency of hardness can be increased without production of sludge (Wilms and Dijk, 1992).
Total hardness is due mainly to calcium and magnesium, and the final fraction of each component for raw water is unknown. The influence of each fraction can be studied by changing the water characteristics by adding calcium and magnesium compounds and then the reactor for verification of the performance.
