Electrical resistivity survey has been widely used as one of geophysical survey for
non-destructively imaging in the dam. In this study, the electrical resistivity monitoring system was
developed for real-time leak detection. The system is divided into two parts: the field system and
office system. Two systems are connected by bidirectional CDMA communication. The system
control unit remotely controls the data acquisition unit and receives acquired data through CDMA
communication. Received monitoring data are stored in the data base and processed whenever it is
needed. We acquired resistivity monitoring data at a test dam site that is located at the southern
part of Korean peninsula. We first installed electrodes permanently at the center of the crest. The
electrical resistivity data was acquired every 6 hours from Apr. 3, 2011 to July. 31, 2012. To analyze
the characteristics of monitoring data, the standard deviation of each resistivity data was calculated
from up to 2,950 data sets. The result indicated a seasonal resistivity variation due to related
temperature. The applicability and reliability were verified and the importance of electrical resistivity
monitoring for obtaining reliable result was emphasized.
