This paper studies the settlement characteristics of the embankment on soft foundation via centrifuge model tests. Over recent decades, massive embankment reinforcement has been widely performed along major rivers in Korea. Many of the reinforced embankments have been constructed on soft ground. The consolidation of the soft foundation can be in different process depending on the locations: under the existing embankment or the reinforced part. These different processes of the soft foundation can cause differential settlement of the soft ground and embankment. This differential settlement can impact a serious effect on the safety of the embankment. This study, using a centrifuge model test, simulated the differential settlement induced by the difference ofconsolidation degrees in soft foundation and safety impact on the embankment was studied. The existing embankment was constructed and then the reinforced embankment was constructed on the existing embankment. During the centrifuge tests, the deformation of the embankment and the soft foundation was captured through transparent window. The photos were analyzed by GeoP.I.V. The result shows that the differential settlement occurs corresponding to the differential consolidation degree between the foundations consolidated by existing embankment and reinforced embankment. |
