Based on the re-analyses of lateral spreading case histories, a site-characteristic curve to correlate mobilized strength ratio (Su,mob/σ'vo, MSR) with Newmark displacement might be a useful tool to understand how vulnerable the given soil slope is. Yield acceleration (ky) can be back calculated from observed maximum displacement. In order to obtain the ky value, mobilized strength ratio can also be back calculated. Qualitatively, estimated range of permanent displacements of any given slope can be obtained. When the probable bandwidth of mobilized strength ratio is less than static shear stress ratio (the asymptote), unlimited deformation may occur during earthquakes. |
