The Sihwa tidal power plant generates power using the hydraulic pressure by tidal water level difference between the Yellow Sea and lake Sihwa, Korea. In spite of a single action flood tide type, the water discharged from the lake without the generation of electricity has still a lot of kinetic energy during the ebb tide. Therefore feasibility for installation of a tidal current turbine behind the sluice gates has been investigated in order to utilize the discharged energy. The turbine produces electric power with the fast velocity discharged flow during the ebb tide, and the water level at the lake, drops as less as the amount of the discharged water is reduced by the drag of the turbine. During the operation of the tidal power plant, the sea water less enters into the lake as the amount of the undischarged water. In other words, the generating electric power of the tidal power plant would be reduced by the hatched area. The amount of undischarged water has been predicted by solving the Navier-Stokes equations, and the reduced electric power has been compared with the generating power by a tidal current turbine. |
