The natural period is one of the most important factors for dynamic characteristics of a vibration system. When we evaluate behaviors of a dam subjected to an earthquake using numerical analysis, the natural period of the dam can be used the fundamental data for verifying input parameters and the analysis results. The periods of existing dams can be estimated from earthquake observation. In 1984, Okamoto proposed the empirical equation for estimating the fundamental periods of rockfill dams by analyses of the earthquake records obtained at dam sites. Until now, this equation is practically and extensively being used in our country. However, because this formula was based on the data observed at Japanese dam site, an approximate formula for estimating the existing rockfii dam, which can be considered suitable for application to dams in our country, is needed. The purpose of this study is to introduce the results of case studies on estimating the fundamental period of the domestic rockfill dams using microearthquake records and to recommend a formula for estimating the natural period of domestic rockfill dams. The total 20 earthquake records, which were observed at 7 rockfill dams subjected to 6 microearthquake events in from 2009 to 2010, were analyzed for establishing the empirical formula. |
