In this study, an analytical method was developed for determining the perchlorate concentrations
in effluent samples obtained from two refineries. The primary and confirmatory methods used
were from EPA 314.1. The two methods found similar perchlorate concentrations for the Y
refinery sample; however, there was a significant difference in the concentration values found for
the K refinery sample. The difference was attributed to co-eluting ions with nearly the same
retention time as perchlorate. For more accurate and reliable analysis, the two samples were
analyzed by Ion Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry(IC-MS/MS) in Multiful
Reaction Monitoring(MRM) mode. The results from IC-MS/MS corresponded well to the
confirmatory method. In conclusion, these results show that the primary method of EPA 314.1
can return false data due to co-eluting ions with perchlorate.
