Recently, extremely high turbidity of inflow occurred at multi-purpose dams in Korea, Soyanggang Dam and Imha Dam, which caused serious problems in terms of technical and social aspects. The highly turbid water remains for a long time in the reservoir and then eventually causes water quality deterioration, increases in water treatment cost, and other problems in the ecosystem of both the reservoir and downstream. There are several causes of turbid water including an increase in rainfall intensity, the frequency of extreme rainfall, changes in vegetation and negligence of watershed management. Many studies have been carried out by government, river basin organization and research institute on the countermeasure of turbid water. Unfortunately they have not yet explored the whole mechanism of turbid water generation and dynamic in reservoir. The objective of this study is to establish integrated management guidelines of turbid water in Korea for reducing the negative effects in a reservoir and downstream. This research explored various causes of turbid water based on interdisciplinary approach, which covers turbid water generation mechanisms, hydrodynamic characteristics in reservoirs and ecological impact and proposed the guideline for turbid water management in Korea. |
