Freshwater fishes are the highest vertebrates in terms of species diversity, but, at the same time, the most endangered (Duncan and Lockwood, 2001). Of freshwater fish species totaling up to 212 throughout the Korean peninsula, some 50 species (23.6%) are believed to be among species endemic to Korea, many of which are found in the mountainous regions (Kim and Park, 2002). Protection areas (e.g. national parks) play an important role in conserving freshwater fishes in Korea; still, there is a need to better identify their value in terms of bio-geographical fish diversity and other factors that have impacts on fish communities. |
