Target pesticides such as organophosporous, triazine, pyrethroids and related compounds in surface water samples were determined by Orbitrap mass spectrometry with conventional HLB solid phase extraction (SPE) method. A HPLC system was interfaced to LTQ Orbitrap mass spectrometer (Thermo, Bremen, Germany) using an electrospray interface. Resolving power of Orbitrap MS was 60,000 at full width half maximum (FWHM). MS data were acquired over an m/z range of 100-600 Da. Water samples were collected in brown bottles (0.5 L) from July to October 2010 in selected sites from Han River and Youngsan River area. The full spectrum data provided by Orbitrap MS acquisition has enabled searching for many other compounds that could be present in the samples in a retrospective way. This approach has allowed the detection and confirmation of other non-target compounds. Preliminary application of Orbitrap MS was shown as an efficient and powerful technique for the rapid detection and confirmation of pesticides in surface water with conventional SPE method.
