The purpose of this study is to analyze the micro-earthquake records observed at a rockfill dam, the Haengseung multi-purpose dam, in Korea and to back-calculate the shear wave velocity profile of the rockfill zone by repeated two-dimensional dynamic analyses, which use the record observed at the abutment as the input dynamic load. The fundamental frequency of the dam was determined by analyzing the response spectrum of the observed records. By repeated dynamic analyses for various shear moduli of the rockfill material, the shear moduli in the rockfill zone that satisfy the relationship between the fundamental frequency obtained by analysis of the observed records and that by numerical analyses were determined. From the determined shear moduli, the shear wave velocity profile in the rockfill zone was calculated. The fundamental frequency of the Haengseung dam was found to be 2.78Hz, and the back-calculated shear wave velocity profile was almost the same as that obtained by the empirical method recommended by Sawada and Takahashi. Also, it was found that the acceleration response of the dam computed by dynamic analysis, which uses the rockfill shear moduli determined from the back-calculated shear wave velocities as the input parameters, was in close agreement with the observed acceleration record. |
