In Asian Countries, Japan, China, Korea, non-intrusive technique for river discharge measurement using Microwave Doppler radar has been developed over the last 20 years to measure river discharge during floods which are occurred frequently every year. Typhoons occurred in this region also make difficult to measure river discharge accurately due to the high rain intensity. In those countries, the conventional technologies such as current meters with rotating cups or propeller and floats can not guarantee accurate discharge measurements because water velocities during floods range from 2 to 4 m/s. In case of South Korea, river discharge is increased sharply due to the comparatively steep bed slope and also rain is concentrated in a certain period of each year, June to September, due to the geological characteristics of temperate zone. |
