The flood travel time in channel is very important factor when K-water (Korea Water Resourced Corporation) makes dam release decision of multi-purpose dam operation. This paper develops a methodology for national river scale flood travel time modeling that integrates dam outflow data, ubiquitous technology and a hydraulic model (HEC-HAS). The Namhan national river in Han River basin, South Korea, is the domain of the study because it is a river subject to annual occurrences of severs flash flooding. Two major floods in the summer of 2006 and 2007 were chosen as a case to examine the hydraulic modeling. Ubiquitous technique was used to measure the flood travel time from dam outflow gates. The model was calibrated manually by comparing observed with simulated travel time for 2006 storm event and verified for 2007 storm event. The results of this research will benefit future modeling efforts by providing a tool for hydraulic forecasts of flooding on national river scale. While designed for the Namhan River, this national river scale model may be used as a prototype for model application in other rivers of South Korea. Consequently, the final accurate flood time which is performed by sensor technology in real survey and numerical modeling output is very useful information of dam manager’s reasonable making decision when dam release in flood season. |
