In this project, the design and optimization of a hybrid RO/IX system for high-purity industrial water supply have been performed, being focused on the deionization of brackish water from Asan Lake, which is an important source water for major industrial complex in one of water-scarce regions in Korea. The source water of Asan Industrial Water Treatment Plant (IWTP) contains various ions such as chloride, sulfate, and calcium, which is difficult to remove by conventional water treatment processes. Among the influent ions, chloride concentration ranged from 113 to 160 mg/L, and electric conductivity (EC) value ranged from 199 to 1025 μS/cm during the period of 2008. To produce high-purity water for industrial complex, A RO pilot plant and demonstration plant coupled with IX system were built in Asan IWPT in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The pilot testing program of RO is aimed to conduct pilot testing and to obtain design parameters such as water quality, operating parameters for the full-scale facility design of RO coupled with IX process, and to consequently produce cost-effective UPW for industrial use. |
