The construction project of Sihwa Tidal Power Plant was approved by the government to improve the water quality of sihwa lake and develop clean renewable energy resource in 2002. It is the largest in the world and the first of its kind in Korea.
All possible power generation types including ebb tide generation and double action on condition of management water level(EL.-1.0m) of Sihwa lake is reviewed. Finally, single action, flood tide generation type is chosen. The horizontal bulb type, Kaplan turbine is selected. It makes high efficiency generation on condition of small head and large capacity.
The structure base is planned to rest on hard rock among layers to secure stability of structures. Structures consist of turbine generator structure, roller type watergate structure and connecting structure. 10 bulb type turbine generators and 8 roller type watergates are to be installed. 2 unit 1 block construction system is planned for efficient design, for example, reducing thickness of structure.
As Korea relies heavily on oil imports and reducing CO2 gas emission is a must in years, it is urgent to develop alternative energy resources, especially renewable energy resources, for the survival of the country.
Sihwa tidal power plant is expected to be a stepstone making Korea be a leading country in renewable energy development.
