Consideration of fish impact assessment with dredging in streams |

An investigation on fish impact assessment has been performed at up- and downstream of dredging section in Gam Stream, which is one of 1st tributaries of Nakdong River, in order to evaluate change of fish fauna and community and to determine any negative effect by dredging. Among them, analysis of habitat condition on endangered species, Gobiobotia nakdongensis was concentrated with understanding existence of impact on their habitat change. A total 3,973 of fish belonging 7 families 24 species were caught from the investigation (2007~2009), and eight Korean endemic species (33.3%) including Odontobutis platycephala were found. In addition, two introduced species, Carassius cuvieri and Micropterus salmides were caught at the end of main channel. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmides) was classified as ecologically harmful species so that there should be a plan to prevent their disturbance from population of endangered species and Korean endemic species. According to fish investigation before, mid-, and after dredging, the endangered species were found in all of main channel including dredging section. They prefer shallow run (0.14~0.46m, 0.239~0.585 m/sec) microhabitat than deep pool. In addition, they prefer about 1% of gravel (> 4.74mm), 83.4% coarse sand (> 0.425mm), and 15.6% fine sand (> 0.075mm), based on analysis of substrate composition that they were found. Also there was no effect due to turbid water occurred from dredging. Even though turbid water was occurred by dredging, the suspended sediment settled down immediately due to large particle size so that it did not continue much toward downstream. Therefore, there has not been found any adverse effect on dredging in Gam Stream so far, but we should keep monitoring for long time period with a various ways such as index of biotic integrity, in order to conserve endangered species and ecological health in the aquatic ecosystem. |
