Determination of evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge is a critical issue for estimating water resources and groundwater management in a watershed. This study determined evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge, using water balance technique incorporated with SCS-CN and Thornthwaite methods, for one area belonging to the lower basin of the Nakdong River in South Korea. The 30-year climatological data from January 1977 until December 2006(precipitation and atmospheric temperature) were obtained from the rain gauging station located in Miryang City. Direct runoff was decided soil group, B, was characterized by san with small amount of clay and silt in agricultural land and by flat land with moderate infiltration rates and moderately low runoff potential. Direct runoff was estimated 274.1 mm/yr, and baseflow 125.8 mm/yr that corresponds to the average value for the Nakdong River basin. Evapotranspiration was determined as 651.1 mm/yr. As a result, groundwater recharge estimated by the water balance analysis was 209.8 mm/yr, corresponding to 16.7% of the 30-year averge annual precipitation(1,260.9mm/yr) |
