In this study the ability of water purification by a constructed wetland, the Sihwa wetland, was estimated by considering water quality between inlet and outlet, removal ability of pollutants by sediment, organic matter production by primary producer (plant, phytoplankton, attached algae) within the wetlands. And then we clarified the major causes on a drop in water purification ability by the wetland, and we also established various improvement plans on the ability of water purification. The removal efficiency of BOD, TN and TP in the wetlands was varied with season and pollutants, showing the annual mean efficiency of 12.3% for BOD, 43.1% for TN, and -44.5% for TP. Generally, the efficiency was low in summer season, except for TN. Compared with BOD and TP, TN were removed constantly with high removal efficiency in all wetlands. In contrast, the efficiency for BOD and TP went to reverse with rising the water temperature of wetland. The efficiency of BOD and TP has been deteriorated from beginning operation of the Sihwa wetland in 2002. The causes of decreased removal efficiency of water purification ability by the wetland are as follows. First is continuous accumulation of suspended solids from the influent and litter from plant in wetland. Second is the water flow distribution in wetland was not uniform. Third is excessive organic production by phytoplankton and attached algae etc. Considering the above various causes, we established a relevant plan to improve the ability of water purification in the Sihwa wetland. First is improvement of water flow in wetland by structural changes such as dividing wetland into several segment, induction of water flow by construction of Zig-Zag embankment. |
