Jangheung Dam was built in the upper reach of the Tamjin River which flows through the Jangheung county and the Gangjin county of the Jeollanam Province, Korea. A various fish conservation facilities were established in Jangheung Dam watershed in order to prevent negative effect on aquatic ecosystem due to dam construction; ice-harbor fishway, Crane-type Dam fishway, floating island, and artificial spawning habitat. Therefore, we have been monitoring their efficiency on fish conservation. In addition, fish community in eight sites of up- and downstream of Jangheung Dam was investigated to evaluate changes before and after dam construction. According to the results in 2006, 15 species included in 6 families were confirmed to swim through ice-harbor fishway, and 18 species were collected in cage of Crane-type Dam fishway. There were 6 families and 16 species found in the artificial spawning habitat. However, no evidence of embryos attachment in fiber roots under floating islands was found. A total of 30 species was found to use and inhabit those facilities, and there was 10 Korean endemic species among them. However compared to the result of previous year, efficiency on ice-harbor fishway was declined so that it is necessary to expand investigation scope in order to understand a reason of decline. Also, it is considered that effect on fish ecology would be underestimated due to recent dam construction and impoundment. Therefore, the study should be continued to monitor change of fish ecosystem in many different ways.
