For agricultural land use of waste sludge as liquid fertilizer its hygienic safety must be evaluated. To do that, fecal coliforms, (oo)cysts of Giardia and Crytosporidium and waterborne viruses in sludge both of thickener and anaerobic digester were detected according to Korean Standard Method, US EPA1623 and US EPA ICR, respectively. As results, the initial no. (7.2?105 - 2.8?106 CFU/g dw) of fecal coliforms used as indicator for safety in both of sludge reduced to less than 1,000 CFU/g (class A, EPA) within 2 days when its sludge stabilized under aeration. However the cyst of Giardia not included in regulation for its quality standard and limits was detected in anaerobic digester (88 cysts/4g) and still present in fertilizer (1 cyst/4g). Furthermore waterborne viruses in both of sludge were also detected in the range of 6.2 - 8.9 MPN/4g. Thus the presence of pathogenic microorganisms should be carefully checked before its agricultural use, especially if plants grown in those sludge-amended soil were intended for human ingestion. |
