The concrete faced rockfill dam, in spite of its increasing popularity with
construction engineers, is perhaps one structure where the design is still largely empirical
and is based on past experience rather than theory. In this study, research on the behavior
of CFRD was conducted to provide supporting background for design, construction, and
maintenance. Numerical analysis was performed to understand the behavior of CFRD and to
identify the various factors influencing the development of stresses and strains in the face
slab and the rockfill embankment during construction and impoundment.
