Small drinking water or private water system using ground water faces continuing
challenge in meeting the requirements of the safe water regulation in Korea. In
general, water quality issues associated with small water systems, where are remote
areas far from public water supply service, are directly related to the quality of the
water source. Currently, the common problem of these areas is nitrate contamination of
groundwater which occur a potential health effects associated with nitrate-nitrogen
level in excess of 10 mg NO3-N/L. For this reason, KOWACO established tight NF membrane
system for elementary schools in Chung-Nam province to provide highly qualified water
to children. As the results of demonstration for 1.5 year operation, nitrate rejections
achieved with these systems were shown 60~75 percent approximately.
