Urban riverine space consists of flood plain areas and water surface space, and the
riverine space has valuable natural and open characteristics in line with recent
urbanization. The importance of riverine space is recently growing, and great efforts
are being made to recover riverine ecosystems ravaged due to urbanization by using
natural riverine methods. Thus, to manage riverine space, needed are comprehensive
surveys of riverine environments, systematic rational management and plans, but usage
of riverine space has yet to be evaluated vigorously.
woo et. al(1993) surveyd managers of rivers in cities and provinces nationwide, and
reviewed maintenance status of urban rivers and riverine usage status. Kim et. al
(1996) surveyed users of the Han River, Daegu Sincheon Stream, and Gangneung
Namdaecheon Stream as to riverine usage types, users′characteristics, and evaluation
of riverine maintenance, thereby grasping riverine usage status. Daejeon Metropolitan
Government (2003) classified the spatial configuration of the city′s three major
streams (Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and Daejeoncheon) into riverine conservation area,
riverine facility maintenance area, and water-friendly activity area, but this
categorization is very limited in identifying the riverine space of cities which is
diversely used. Also, above researches did not specifically identify characteristics of
river channel and riverine space usage status, and are limited in systematically
evaluating riverine space.
This research targeted urban streams, Gapcheon and Yudeungcheon, whose ecosystems
Daejeon Metropolitan is currently restoring, analyzed riverine characteristics and
water quality starus, surveyed riverine space usage status and user status, and
evaluated riverine space usage.
