Tina River Hydro Power Project
The Project has the following unique, transformational characteristics: increase of renewable energy generation in Honia Electricity System from 1 percent in 2016 to 85 percent in 2022 (with 68 percent from the Project and the remainder from expected solar); Green House Gas reduction o; the first utility-scale hydropower project; perhaps the largest investment project in the country; the first BOOT project to be invested by international private sponsors; understanding and sharing risks between public and private sectors; introduction of a benefit-sharing mechanism to benefit the wider community; and an unique land acquisition process which distributes compensation and loyalties equally to all members of newly established tribal cooperatives and establishes a joint government-landowner land management company. All of these factors will help build private sector confidence to invest in large-scale investment projects, in particular, infrastructure, in the Solomon Islands.
The Tina River Hydro Development Project (TRHDP) is a National project of Solomon Islands, managed by a dedicated Project Office under the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, MMERE.
The PC will develop Component 1 – HPF on a buildown-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis under a 34-year PPA including a 4-year construction period. The Tina Hydro Limited was established by the private sponsors (K-water and HEC) under a Shareholders Agreement. The THL contracted an engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) contractor to construct the Hydro Power Facility. The THL will contract an operation and maintenance (O&M) contractor for the operation of the Hydro Power Facility during the 30-year operation period.
Upon completion of the PPA, the private sponsors’ shares and full ownership of the HPF asset will be transferred to SIG.
71.5 m dam (from the foundation), located on the Tina River approximately 11.7 km upstream from the Tina River, the point at which the river then becomes the Ngalimbiu River.
An approximately 3.3 m diameter, 3.3 km long head-race tunnel to connect the dam to the power house.Powerhouse
It will be equipped with 3 turbine/generator units, each with a capacity of 5MW and is located about 5.4 km downstream from the dam.
Dual 66 kV transmission lines in a 50 m corridor from Managikiki Village to the Black Post Turnoff, as well as transmission line route from Black Post Road to the existing Lungga Power Station.
Construction of permanent and temporary access roads to the powerhouse, dam, intake portal, dam base, mini-hydro, quarries, and Black Post Road reserve, amounting to a total of approximately 21.5 km.
Workers’ camps will be located approximately four kilometers south of the Black Post Junction turn off.
Consist of site offices, stores, batch plant, crushing areas and pug mill, fly ash warehouse, and explosives storage facilities.
