The state-of-the-art concept of safety management for dams and facility structures is changing
from evaluation of its safety to evaluation of vulnerability and risk management. It is also a good
issue which is actively discussed in major expert’s groups such as International Commission on
Large Dams (ICOLD) or other international societies and the cases of risk analysis and assessment
around the world are frequently adopted. Awareness of risk analysis and assessment in dam safety
is also growing in Korea and systematic tools for risk-based assessment are now under
development for advanced safety management of dams. In this study explains the development of
risk analysis, assessment and management system for dams as a result of research for advanced
dam safety management tool. It is utilized not only for evaluation of dam safety but for
management under new climate change and ESG management. Introduction of risk analysis and
assessment in dam safety management is necessary and tools for risk analysis specific to Korean
being developed. A new risk assessment system for dams has been developed to integrate the most
important inputs and analysis resulting from an international joint research program. Recently,
dam safety management has been applying new technologies such as AI and big data, and it has
been reviewed to be closely related to measurement data, risk assessment, and asset management.
