The input of substantially amount of phosphorous into aquatic environment as eutrophication would cause algal bloom. In order to prevent water quality problems and to perform effective watershed management related to non-point organic matter (OM) sources, it is important to identify the major OM sources. In this study, several potential OM source were collected from upper agricultural watersheds, including fallen leaves, riparian reeds, riparian plants, paddy soils, field soil, riparian soil, cow manure, and swine manure. During two storm events, stream samples were collected. The concentration of DOC, DON and DIN from DOM sources and stream samples were analyzed. Also, popular DOM indicators using fluorescence spectroscopy (ex, HIX, FI, BIX), EEM-PARAFAC were investigated for their applicability to identify DOM sources in forested-agricultural watersheds during storm events. The representative DOM descriptors were selected based on the criteria in terms of the value ranges and the significant differences between low and high flow period. As a result, paired SR and FI using EMMA (end-member mixing analysis) was relatively suitable to estimate the contribution of organic carbon (OC) in each OM sources during the storm events. Finally, the contribution of each organic phosphorous (OP) in stream samples was calculated with P/C ratio and the OC contribution. The contribution of OP derived from swine manure in stream samples was higher than others as 61.3~94.2% (avg. 78.1±12.7%). This study provides useful guidance for selecting appropriate indicators for identifying various DOM source and discovers major OP source in the forested-agricultural watershed. |
