Due to the high production and consumption of plastic worldwide, it has been drawngreat attention on microplastics(MPs) entered the environment, especially the aquaticenvironment. The research scope of MPs in aqueous environment has been expanding frominvestigation of their presence in oceanic water to the analysis of their source, occurrenceor fate in freshwater, as well as potential environmental or health risks. In recent years,questions concerning very small plastic particles, nanoplastics(NPs, 1~1000 nm), haveemerged. Since the current spectroscopic analytical methods developed for microplastics havea particle size limitation and cannot reach the submicrometer range, mass spectrometrycombined with thermal degradation appears to be a promising technique to meet thesechallenges. Thermal degradation allows the conversion of macromolecules into low molecularweight fragments, which are then separated by gas chromatography and identified by a massdetector(GC-MS). Due to the limited sample weight and the maximum operating temperatureof the thin capillary of Pyrolysis-GC/MS, in this study we present an automated thermalextraction desorption(TED)-GC/MS with a separation of the thermal extraction process whichis suited for the analysis of MPs and NPs in a freshwater samples. |
