In this study, the analytical techniques of 51 domestic and international institutions were assessed based onthe proficiency testing of heavy metals. The proficiency testing samples that were prepared and distributed forthis study were barium and chromium, of which their homogeneity and stability in water were ensured. Thirtyeightinstitutions and 45 institutions participated and submitted their results obtained from the analysis of bariumand chromium, respectively. A statistical assessment on the proficiency test was conducted on the basisof the z-score and the results obtained are as follows: for barium, 1 institution was assessed as unsatisfactoryand 6 as doubtful, and for chromium, 6 were assessed as unsatisfactory and 4 as doubtful. The testing institutionsthat had doubtful or unsatisfactory results need to consider the cause of causal analysis inaccuracies,including reference materials, glassware, inspection of the testing equipment and recalibration, test procedurereviews, tester training, and continuous participation in proficiency tests of relevant areas in order to promoteefforts for improving and taking preventive measures for performance improvement.
