The water distribution system (WDS) reliability is the ability of a network to provide the required quantity of water to customers under uncertain system conditions. In the last two decades, many surrogate measures have been proposed to quantify different aspects of the WDS reliability. In this study, six surrogate measures of WDS reliability - two hydraulic reliability measures, two robustness measures, single failure reliability (SFRel), and seismic reliability (SeisRel) - were investigated. The six reliability measures were calculated for sixteen study networks of various network sizes, numbers of sources, layouts, demand distributions, and topographies. The network characteristics were quantified using system characteristic indicators (SCIs), and their correlations with the six suggested reliability measures were analyzed. Finally, univariate and multivariate linear reliability models were developed by fitting a linear regression line to the scatter plots of the reliability measure and SCI(s). The proposed linear models show good approximation for system reliability prediction using SCI(s) and will help system managers easily estimate the WDS reliability without complex hydraulic simulations. |
