1. indroduction - Sediment such as sand flowing along with water impacts against surfaces of hydrulic turbine components - This can cause sediment erosion in components and severe damage to turbine components - Consequently, the erosion leads to decrease in efficiency and reduces the life of turbine components2. Objectives - Obtain performance characteristics of Francis turbine with sediment - Compare performance of Francis turbine with non-sediment water and sediment laden water - Predict sediment erosion on runner surface3. Conclusion - Computer simulations were conducted to fine out the performance characteristics of Francis turbine with sediment - Properties of quatz was used to model the sediment and Tabakoff and Grant model was adopted for erosion prediction - As a result, the simulation with sediment had more similar performance compared to experimental data - It was thought that sediment erosion mainly would occur at the pressure side than suction side of runner - Also the outlet side of runner was prone to be damaged by sediment erosion |
