Sachun Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which is managed by K-water and is located in the southern region of South Korea, experienced a high level of musty/earthy odor in the tap water of their supply system in 2015. The survey showed that the musty/earthy odor was determined to be 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB). Jinyang Reservoir is the source water of Sachun WTP. To investigate the characteristics of occurrence of 2-MIB, source water was sampled at a depth of 1m in the intake station. Environmental factors, microbial factors, and biological factors were investigated. Dissolved oxygen sharply decreased at a depth of 5m and the water body, 8m in total, was highly stratified. Also, a high level of Pseudanabaena in cyanobacteria was detected at a depth 5m. It could be concluded that the main reason for the high concentrations of 2-MIB was originated from Pseudanabaena. |
