In this study, an analytical method was developed for determining the perchlorate concentrationsin effluent samples obtained from two refineries. The primary and confirmatory methods usedwere from EPA 314.1. The two methods found similar perchlorate concentrations for the Yrefinery sample; however, there was a significant difference in the concentration values found forthe K refinery sample. The difference was attributed to co-eluting ions with nearly the sameretention time as perchlorate. For more accurate and reliable analysis, the two samples wereanalyzed by Ion Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry(IC-MS/MS) in MultifulReaction Monitoring(MRM) mode. The results from IC-MS/MS corresponded well to theconfirmatory method. In conclusion, these results show that the primary method of EPA 314.1can return false data due to co-eluting ions with perchlorate.
