The concrete faced rockfill dam, in spite of its increasing popularity withconstruction engineers, is perhaps one structure where the design is still largely empiricaland is based on past experience rather than theory. In this study, research on the behaviorof CFRD was conducted to provide supporting background for design, construction, andmaintenance. Numerical analysis was performed to understand the behavior of CFRD and toidentify the various factors influencing the development of stresses and strains in the faceslab and the rockfill embankment during construction and impoundment.
