K-water installed and commenced with Sihwa Sewage Treatment Facility (Phase 1) operations in 1988, along with the establishment of the industrial complex which has a daily capacity of 597,000 ㎥ for 9 local governments. In addition, K-water has operated sewage reuse facilities based on private investment projects (BTO), including Pohang City sewage reuse (100,000 ㎥/day), Asan New Town sewage reuse (27,000 ㎥/day), and Chilgok-gun sewage reuse (10,000 ㎥/day), and actively supports the government’s water management policy by facilitating the supply of recycled sewage water as industrial water.

Based on 2019 sewage statistics, 105 million ㎥ of recycled water was used for industry purposes compared to the annual reuse amount of 1,149 million ㎥ from sewage treatment facilities nationwide, of which K-water supplies 52 million ㎥ annually, accounting for 50% of the total industrial water of sewage reuse rate.

The government has established a plan to increase the off-site reuse rate of treated sewage water to 17% by 2030. In January 2021, in its Water Reuse Master Plan, 1,323 million ㎥ of water was used off-site. Accordingly, if the demand for industrial water increases due to the expansion of existing industrial complexes, such as the Yeosu Complex or the construction of large-scale industrial complexes, K-water will review and implement sewage reuse supply plans. In addition, K-water plans to use its water network in existing industrial water supply facilities (dams, waterworks, etc.) and to convert and supply reuse water through an acceptability agreement in line with the policy direction of realizing integrated water management through the facilitation of basin-based sewage reuse.
