Since its establishment, the center has expanded and strengthened relationships with in-country and international organizations in various sectors to serve as Korea's only technical collaborative platform specialized in the Mekong region. It contributes to resolving water issues in Mekong countries and supports the Korean government's foreign policy toward the Mekong region.
In June 2023, the Korea-Mekong Water Center changed its name from Korea-Mekong Water Resources Management Collaborative Research Center to a more concise name to better convey its vision, to be more familiar to the public, and also to broaden its scope of work and play a more significant role in Mekong-RoK cooperation.
MKWF is an annual international water forum between the Mekong countries and multinational development partners. Stakeholders including high-level Ministers, water experts and practitioners from the Mekong region, and the development partner organizations gather, discuss, and exchange dialogues to raise water issues, find solutions, and expand collaboration with other development partners.
KOMEC consistently attends global water conferences to expand its network with global experts and international organizations and share the latest trends in the water sector. KOMEC has participated in water conferences such as the World Water Forum, Asia International Water Week, Korea International Water Week, and the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Summit and International Conference to elevate water issues in the Mekong River Basin to the global agenda and discuss way forwards to collaborate in solving problems.
KOMEC provides technical support to address water issues in the Mekong region, including water disasters, integrated water resources management, information provision, and capacity building. As a water solutions provider, KOMEC works on various projects in collaboration with governments and international organizations that share the same vision with the center.
