K-water is developing dedicated water resources satellites and microsatellite constellations to enhance monitoring and response capabilities for floods, droughts, infrastructure safety, and water quality. This presentation introduces the current water resources satellite program, including C-band SAR and optical microsatellite systems, and key application technologies such as flood inundation mapping, soil moisture and drought monitoring, InSAR-based deformation analysis, and water environment monitoring. It also presents K-water’s international cooperation activities with global research partners and its participation in the International Charter: Space and Major Disasters as a Value Adding Specialist. Recent international disaster-response activities, including the 2026 Nepal flash flood, demonstrate the potential of satellite-based analysis for rapid disaster assessment. Future efforts will focus on integrated satellite constellations and AI-enabled onboard processing to support faster and more autonomous water-disaster monitoring and response. This research was supported by “AI Onboard Technology for Water Resources Micro-Satellites: Core Innovations and Emergency Response to Water-Related Disaster” from Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water). |
