Hydrogen produced from proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is generally characterized by high purity; however, further purification is often required to satisfy the stringent hydrogen quality requirements for storage, fuel cell applications, and high-value industrial processes. While pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane separation technologies are widely employed, cryogenic purification using liquid nitrogen offers an alternative approach for removing residual impurities through low-temperature condensation and separation. This study presents the design and system integration of a liquid nitrogen-based cryogenic hydrogen purification system incorporated into a PEM water electrolysis demonstration facility. The demonstration plant consists of a PEM electrolyzer, gas-liquid separator, cryogenic hydrogen purifier, hydrogen storage system, and auxiliary balance-of-plant (BOP) components. Particular attention was given to the integration of the cryogenic purification unit with the hydrogen production process, considering process flow, thermal management, operational safety, and system compatibility. The proposed purification configuration is intended to provide a practical platform for demonstration-scale production of high-purity hydrogen while establishing engineering guidelines for integrating cryogenic purification into PEM water electrolysis systems. The design strategy presented in this work is expected to contribute to the development of reliable and scalable green hydrogen production facilities.
