This study compares three 3D rendering technologies―photogrammetry, NeRF/Instant NGP, and Gaussian Splatting―for their use in visualizing civil infrastructure. Using a limited set of 118 drone images of the Stanford Dish, the research assessed each method's ability to create a realistic digital twin. Photogrammetry produced 3D meshes suitable for engineering, but it struggled with intricate details and semi-transparent surfaces. NeRF/Instant NGP captured reality well from a distance but had a "watercolor effect" up close and lacked detail. Gaussian Splatting, however, showed the most realistic results, accurately rendering complex and semi-transparent elements, even with a small image set. The main drawback is that its output of 3D ellipses is not ideal for precise engineering measurements Overall, the study concludes that while each technology has unique strengths, Gaussian Splatting offers the best visual realism for civil infrastructure visualization, making it a promising tool for future applications despite its current limitations in measurement. |
