In Korea’s Third National Sewerage Master Plan, emerging issues such as population decline and carbon neutrality have been integrated with traditional challenges in the sewerage sector. In particular, the development of a carbon-neutral sewerage system is of great importance; nevertheless, preparatory efforts for its effective implementation remain insufficient. To achieve this goal, a reliable methodology for accurately quantifying carbon emissions from sewage treatment plants (STPs) must first be established, and subsequent improvements to the unit processes of existing facilities should be implemented based on the results. Furthermore, a comprehensive annual implementation plan should be formulated to systematically execute the entire process. In this study, the Carbon Calculation Tool (CCT) was applied to evaluate CO2 emissions and their characteristics in representative large-, medium-, and small-scale STPs. The results indicate that it is necessary to avoid overestimation and overdesign during the design phase, optimize operational energy consumption, and promote the use of renewable energy. This study contributes to the understanding of CO2 emissions and the relative contributions of unit processes in STPs of different scales, and provides guidance for the development of assessment tools suited to domestic conditions. |
